The Alchemist- Paulo Coelho

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”- – Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist is a short, inspiring tale of a young shepherd named Santiago. He is comfortable in his existing life but he still dares to follow a recurring dream. On his path leading to his goal he realizes and lives things that he had heard of and also gains some new knowledge. He faces many problems on his way but finally accomplishes his purpose. It is through Santiago’s journey the author passed on the wisdom and truth of life to the readers.

I felt that almost every line that Mr. Coelho has written in this book has a deeper meaning to it. It is a small book of about 175 pages or 4 audio CDs (if you listen rather than read) but I took about two months to finish the story. It’s not because I was reading it while vacationing in India 🙂 or there is some problem with my comprehension level but because each and every paragraph made so much sense that I had to re-read them, then stop and think and then move forward. For me, reading this book was a journey in itself and a great learning experience.

Paulo Coelho style of writing is quite impressive. I fell for its simplicity and choice of words. There are no big vocabulary, no extra verbiage; it’s just simple, precise and meaningful. It is fabulous.

Here are some quotes from the book to give you an idea what’s in store for you 🙂

*** “Every search begins with beginners luck and ends with the victor’s being severely tested.” ***

*** “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” ***

*** “It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.” ***

*** “When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.”

I give 5 out of 5 stars to this book. Get hold of it, delve and find out its worth for yourself.
